Virtual Desktop Infrastructure

Newsletters  •  Thought Leadership

As autumn approaches, new things are beginning!

In the spirit of all things new … when’s the last time you chatted with your customers about trying VDI (virtual desktop infrastructure)?

Although this technology has been around for over a decade, recent advances have changed end users’ attitudes. This year, we’re seeing more VDI projects launching than in the whole previous decade!

If you’re hearing the same trends – or your curiosity is piqued – let’s keep going:

Why give VDI a try?

VDI is a quickly growing element of the IT market. Upon launch, the hardware + software powering VDI were immature – and many early deployments fell short of its promise. Finally, VDI is living up to its initial hype.

Over the past year, the development of GPUs + improvements in server resources make VDI a very valid solution for certain environments.

Great fits for VDI …

When you need to offload processing, memory, and/or storage from individual desktops and laptops across an office. You can dip into a large server’s capacity at will.

20, 30, or maybe even 50 individual workstations in play? A VDI host server – if designed well – can serve them all!

When not to use VDI …

Depending on your environment, VDI may not be the best choice, and CPUs may outperform GPUs:

Your end user simply doesn’t have the IT staff to manage the deployment (managed service opportunity, anyone?).

The end user’s staff is located across many sites, where the latency between the hosts + clients degrade performance.

VDI Deals from B2X

If you call on B2X to help with your VDI setup, we can connect you with HPE servers + NVIDIA graphics cards for a complete and validated solution.

More on GPUs + your budget: They’re tailor-made for VDI workloads – and drive an excellent end-user experience. Keep in mind that your GPU is a huge part of the project’s spend. For instance, in a $15k host server, the GPU could be $5–8k of that total cost.

Our favorites (shhh, don’t tell the other hardware):

SERVER: HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen 10

$2,000–$20,000 (depending on resources)

  • Fast, fast, fast – utilizing the latest and greatest Intel chipset
  • Better throughput – even for latency-sensitive workload
  • Totally customizable to each opportunity and environment
  • Top-selling server, worldwide!

GPU: NVIDIA Tesla P40

$5,000–$8,000 (depending on size)

  • Anywhere access
  • Supports many! 24 virtual desktops (1 GB profile) or 12 virtual workstations (2 GB profile)
  • Management & monitoring is flexible – with real-time GPU insights
  • Best end-user scalability per GPU
